My Frugal Accomplishments This Week

Whoops! I said I would do this weekly but its been just over two weeks since the last time I did one of these roundups. To be honest, I was on vacation for most of that time, and just writing up about the frugal things I did on vacation seems kinda weird, but ok. So now that I'm home, here's the frugal things I did in the last week.

Frugal in the Kitchen:

Made apple pie from yucky looking apples.
Turned failed rice into veggie rice soup.
Turned failed rice into tomato rice soup.
Used mushy bananas in oatmeal.
Made oatmeal cookies.
Made homemade bread.
When one of my bread batches didn't rise, I turned it into flatbread.

Frugal Shopping

Bought veggies on sale from a discount supermarket.
Bought some usually very expensive whiskey on sale and without tax, so a fraction of its usual price.
Got tickets from groupon for a boat ride for the family.
I bought donuts for the kids on sale.
I used my card for a certain supermarket and got an initial $30 off my shop plus more discounts.

Frugal Transportation

My family and I took an expensive bus ride. You can prepay to order your seats in advance, or you can get cheaper tickets (children's fare) if you buy tickets on the bus. But this means chancing not having designated seats. We did that, and we ended up needing to sit on the floor or sit on each others lap, but I saved a lot of money this way. (I hadn't intended it to be this way, to be honest. On the way there we did the same and all got seats, just on the way back we were less lucky.(
I paid extra for extra insurance when renting my car in Bulgaria. I ended up having a scratch on the car and instead of needing to pay for this out of pocket, I'm going to have the insurance pay for it.

Other:

I had a problem with the apartment I rented out for the last portion of my vacation. I complained about it to the site that rented it out to me and they refunded my deposit.
I hung laundry to dry instead of using the dryer.
Unclogged my bathroom shower.
I had a leak in my living room ceiling, and I called the contractor who built this place and got them to fix it free of charge.

What did you do to save money this past week?

  1. Love the flatbread idea! I'll have to remember that and tell others.
