Unfortunately, within the last week, our spare refrigerator/freezer that we keep on our back porch completely died, and all the stuff in the freezer spoiled. Luckily, the stuff in the fridge survived, but got to the point where they needed to be used up right away. And with half the freezer space I originally had, freezing produce to preserve it was not an option.
One of the things I had in the fridge was a large amount of apples that I got for free, because they were past prime.
I divided up the apples, and the ones in worse condition, I cut out the bad parts and made the rest into applesauce which I then water bath canned. And with the rest, I made apple chips. Super easy. And of course frugal, paleo, vegan, gluten free, and allergy friendly.
Here's how I made them.
Homemade Easy Apple Chips Recipe
Ingredients:Apples
Cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:
1. Core your apples. Ok, this is the only hard part because if you don't have a corer you'll need to buy one or do it carefully with a knife.
2. Slice your apples thinly and evenly. I used my mandolin for this, making it super quick and all even.
3. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon if you want.
4. Lay them out flat and mostly not overlapping on lined oven trays.
5. Put your oven to approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit or 50 Celsius, and prop the oven door open slightly (I usually put in the back of a utensil) to allow steam to escape.
6. Dehydrate until completely dry and hard. If you want, you can flip them over midway. The amount of time this takes will depend on how thin you slice them and some other factors, but approximately 12 hours of waiting time is enough. I usually put it in supper time and check up on it again in the morning.
Enjoy!
