Frugal Tip of the Day (FTOTD): Missed Your Amazon Return Window?

I’m starting a new series, called FTOTD, Frugal Tip of the Day, where its just a frugal idea I have, not neccesarily a long idea, long enough for a normal post, but worth sharing nonetheless. Here’s my first frugal tip of the day.

Shopping on Amazon is great and really convenient, even if not as convenient for me as it is for you American folk, since most of the time my orders need to be picked up from a pick up point. But since they have very good prices, a ton of variety, and reviews, it is easy to find what you need.

But sometimes something arrives and it isn’t quite right.

And that’s where customer service and this post comes in.

If you need to return an item, it is simple enough. Just print the paper with the return information on it, package it, and drop it off at a drop off center. Super easy.

But if you’re like myself without a working printer, and returning something means either getting a neighbor to print it or getting the paper printed at a store, it might take a little longer to get that done. And maybe, like myself, you’re busy and didn’t get around to it.

I recently bought two items on Amazon that were quite pricey, relatively, at 45 and 50 dollars each, and they didn’t fit, so I planned on returning them.

Then life got in the way. And then I ended up in the hospital.

And I finally had an appointment at the place where there was a drop off for Amazon returns, and when I went to print the papers needed, I saw that my return window had closed.

Oops. Too much time had passed and I hadn’t realized,

Since I wanted to recoup at least some of the money I spent on it, I listed it for sale in a few local sale groups, and a few people gave me the same idea.

Just ask them to extend the return window.

Easier said than done. Since on Amazon, you can only talk to customer service about newer items.

But if you go to the customer service page, click on a different item, and click on return the item, click a random reason why, and then choose “I need more help” and then you can choose to chat with someone or request a phone call.

Once you get a representative, tell them you need help with a different item, and then tell them the order number. Then you can ask them to increase the return window for the item.

I don’t know if they always agree to it, but they’ve done it for my friends and for myself, so they probably will agree to it for you as well.

So there’s my frugal tip of the day! See you next time!

Are you an Amazon shopper? Have you ever missed a return window? What did you do then?
