It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these posts, but it’s been requested that I do them more often. I recently went grocery shopping, and nearly everything I bought was on sale, and much of it at terrific prices. So here are the sales and/or frugal items I picked up on my last grocery shopping trip.
First off, even before I made it to the grocery store, I walked into a discount variety store and was surprised to see that they were not only starting to sell food, but they had rice on sale for a terrific price.
I bought three one-kilo packages of Persian rice for $2.85, or $0.95 each, instead of the usual $1.97 each.
They had one-kilo packages of basmati rice, 2 for $2.85, or $1.42 per package, when they usually sell for $2.85-$3.42 each.
Then I went to the grocery store and was confronted by their produce specials display before I even walked in.
Cucumbers, sweet potatoes, carrots, eggplant, purple onions, and butternut squash were all $0.38 a pound. Their non-sale prices are as follows:
Sweet potatoes are anywhere from $0.89-$1.54 per pound currently, so this sale is quite a steal.
Cucumbers are $0.50-$1.15 per pound at the moment.
Carrots are $0.50 per pound or more.
Eggplant costs $0.89-$1.29 per pound.
Butternut squash goes for $0.89-$1.15 per pound.
And purple onions, which I don’t typically get because they are more expensive than regular yellow onions, are generally $0.77-$1.15 per pound. But at this price they were cheaper than yellow onions, which were $0.50-$0.76 per pound, so I might as well get them, since anywhere you can use yellow onions, you can use purple onions, even if not vice versa.
With such prices, I knew I’d have a good and frugal grocery shop, because these were already such steals. I got a good few pounds of each of them, getting the most sweet potatoes because I knew we’d go through them the quickest and that the sale on them was the most significant.
Once I entered the grocery store, I saw more staples on sale.
Flour was on sale: three one-kilo packages for $2.85, or $0.95 each instead of $1.34 a pop.
Sugar was also 3 for $2.85, or $0.95 each, when their usual price is $1.57 a package.
I bought 3 of each.
They had a Nutella-style hazelnut chocolate spread for $2.85 instead of its usual $5.11, and I bought it. (Upon taste testing, it tastes exactly the same as the more expensive Nutella and other Nutella knockoffs we usually get, so it was very worthwhile.)
Once I got to the produce section, I saw they were selling packages of cherry tomatoes for $1.69 instead of the usual $2.83, so I bought a few. My kids prefer cherry tomatoes to regular tomatoes, and at this price they’re something I’m willing to splurge on.
I bought a brined feta-style cheese for $5.06 per pound instead of $5.45 per pound. Not such a difference, but it was from the cheese counter, so it was significantly cheaper than packaged feta cheese, and I use it interchangeably in recipes.
I bought baguettes, 2 for $2.85, or $1.42 each, instead of $1.68 per baguette. Not significant savings, but hey, I said I’d show you what I bought on sale, so I’m showing it anyhow.
I bought a large jug of yogurt for $5.97, which, while not on sale, is still significantly cheaper than the smaller cups of yogurt I generally buy. It’s just less convenient and requires sweetening the yogurt myself, but it’s worth the savings.
Last but not least, they had Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, buy 2, get 1 free. Even though at $6.54 a pint they are a little more than the usual price of $6 or the sale price of $5.14 I get it for, with the buy 2, get 1 free promotion I end up getting 3 for $13.08, or $4.36 per pint. So I bought 6.
All in all, I’d say this was a great grocery shop, and I came home satisfied that it was money well spent.
Have you done any frugal grocery shops lately? What great deals have you gotten? Any you’re especially excited about?
