Today, October 11 (yes, I know the publish date of this post doesn’t match up, but that’s when this was written), my daughter Rose finally started school! This was not a simple journey, to say the least.
For those of you following our journey, I’ve written before about the ridiculous school situation with my daughters. Already a few weeks before school started I tried pressing the municipality for answers about where my daughters would be going to school, but kept getting pushed to someone else. And then finally I was told by them that they had no school for my daughters, period.
No one answered phones, so I made many visits to various municipal offices, where I kept being told different versions of the same thing: they couldn’t help me.
My older daughter, Anneliese, decided to go to an English-speaking high school in a farther city, so it was just Rose that needed a school.
And then finally, they found a school for my daughter that wanted to accept her, but the seventh grade class was full. Then they said they would put her in the eighth grade there, but they couldn’t put her in the class just yet, until two girls that were in the class left. And we were given no start date.
After far, far, far too long, she started. Today.
This morning we were invited to a meeting with the teacher, and I asked if she would be starting today as well, and we weren’t given an answer, just a noncommittal “We’ll see and decide in the meeting.” So I told Rose not to get excited just yet.
But the meeting with the teacher went well. She seems really great and understanding and empathetic and kind and open-minded. She recommended that Rose stay only until 1:30 on her first day, and then stay a full day tomorrow, so she could ease into school after being home for so long.
Because of this, she had no ride home through the school, so when I went to pick her up, she was really excited.
“Mommy, the school is really amazing! The girls are wonderful! And there’s a cafeteria with lots of yummy and nice food! And the teacher is strict but nice!”
She couldn’t stop raving about how excited she was about school this afternoon. I can’t tell you how relieved I was to hear her say that, after all the stress of the past month and a half.
I’m so glad that after a long and grueling journey, both girls finally have a place in good schools, and I can stop stressing about that, and help them adjust to high school and eighth grade.

Wonderful news. I wonder if it’s the same teacher my granddaughter had in junior high.
