For years I was broke and any clothes I got were from clothing swaps or second hand stores. Being a larger person, even before I gained weight from taking psychiatric medication, it wasn’t the easiest to find clothes that fit me, so if I found something that fit me, covered the parts of my body I keep covered, and it was cheap (or free), I took it. At some point, though, I realized that I felt ugly in what I was wearing. Frumpy and really unattractive, and because of that, it made it hard to feel good about myself.
My friend Michelle helped me have a makeover on a budget so I had clothes that made me feel pretty, without needing to spend too much money at all.
As moms, we sometimes neglect ourselves, but self confidence is important, and part of that is dressing in ways that you enjoy and make you feel good about yourself, whatever that style is.
Here are some fashion mistakes moms often make and suggestions on how to cheaply fix things so you feel better about yourself and your body.

As a mother, finding time for yourself is often a steep uphill battle. Between preparing meals, supervising play dates, and helping with homework, personal self-care, let alone staying on top of the latest fashion trends, can easily take a back seat. However, your role as a mom doesn’t have to exclude you from looking fabulous and feeling confident in your skin. Unfortunately, many moms unknowingly commit a few common fashion faux pas. The good news is that these fashion mistakes can be easily rectified!
Mistake #1: Relying Too Much on Mom Jeans
Sure, they’re comfortable and reliable, but mom jeans don’t always have to be your default choice. Relying solely on mom jeans can flatten your style, leaving you stuck in a fashion rut.
Fix it: Invest in a Variety of Pants
Besides your favorite pair of mom jeans, look to invest in a variety of pants to diversify your wardrobe. Good American black jeans, trend-lovers’ go-to skinny jeans, athleisure joggers, and even a pair of palazzo pants can add significant mileage to your fashion style. This prevents over-reliance on any single pair and allows you to experiment with different looks.
Mistake #2: Overlooking Accessories
If you’re a mom always heading out in a rush, you would probably pay little attention to accessories. However, the addition of the right accessories can drastically change your look and elevate your outfit.
Fix it: Add Simple yet Stylish Accessories
Invest in some simple yet stylish accessories that can easily blend with most outfits. Consider items like a structured handbag, unique earrings, a stackable bracelet set, or even a fashionable scarf. Small touches of accessories can add flair to an otherwise plain ensemble.
Mistake #3: Wearing Ill-fitted Clothing
One of the biggest fashion mistakes moms make is wearing clothes that do not fit properly. Whether it’s because of rapidly changing post-baby bodies or simply because of convenience, some moms often settle for clothes that are either too baggy or too tight.
Fix it: Prioritize a Good Fit
You deserve clothes that fit just right. Prioritize outfits that respect your body type and fit you well. Don’t shy away from tailored dresses, structured blouses, or fitted pants. They can provide a sleeker, more refined look compared to loose, baggy outfits.
Mistake #4: Sticking to Dull Colors
Some moms find themselves stuck in a cycle of monotonous, dull colors. They fall into the habit of gravitating towards neutral shades like black, white, and gray to look more mature or practical.
Fix it: Embrace Colors and Patterns
While neutrals may be a practical choice, adding touches of color and patterns to your wardrobe can enhance your style and mood. Incorporate colorful tops, floral prints, or bold stripes into your outfits to break the monotony and add an element of fun.
Mistake #5: Low Priority on Footwear
With comfort being a primary necessity for moms, it’s understandable how one can end up choosing function over fashion. However, wearing worn-out, dated footwear can be a downer on your overall appearance.
Fix it: Combine Comfort with Style
It’s possible to find footwear that snugly fits both comfort and style. Options like strappy sandals, slip-on sneakers, fashionable ankle boots, or brightly-colored flats can add versatility to your wardrobe without sacrificing walking comfort.
Remember, fashion is more about feeling great than just looking great. These little adjustments can go a long way to elevate your style and enhance your confidence as you tackle the wonders of motherhood each day. So, get out of the fashion rut and step into your style power, super moms!
