It’s that time again. Another frugal tip of the day (FTOTD). The series where something might not be “enough” for a regular post but I’m going to make these separate posts anyhow.
Fixing Your Inedible Rice
I am very picky about my rice. It is one of those few foods that I need to have exactly made correctly- if it is pasty or it has hard bits in it, I can’t tolerate it.
But sometimes rice is made correctly.
But it might not have been stored properly. Maybe you forgot to cover it in the fridge.
Or maybe you heated it on a hot plate a little too long.
But either way you have previously perfectly cooked rice that now is hard and unappetizing.
Don’t throw it out!
There’s a perfect and simple solution that will bring it back to its previous taste and texture.
Reconstitute It
Take your rice. Dried rice can be mixed in with regular rice. Put it in a bowl or another high sided container.
Add about a tablespoon or two of water to the bottom of the bowl/container.
Keep it covered and microwave it for about 2-3 minutes.
The water will steam the rice, it will reconstitute it, and it’ll be back to perfection.
If the rice got a little toasted on a hot plate, the yellow/golden color will remain but the texture will now be perfect.
Voila, simple as that.
Cook It Some More
Of course, you can always use dried rice the same way you would use dried rice or mushy rice.
For that you cook it in liquid until it intentionally becomes mushy.
Boil it up with some water or milk, add sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and maybe an egg or two (don’t forget to temper it first) and turn it into rice pudding.
Or my favorite is make it into tomato rice soup. Boil it in water until its the texture you want, add tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, oregano and/or basil, and salt to taste.
Don’t throw out that rice. There are ways to make it taste terrific!
Does your rice ever get dried out? What do you do to make it edible again? Any of the ones I do? Or do you toss it? Do these tips look like tips you’d try?
