Can You Do Venice Cheaply? Yes, and Here’s How

I’ve shared before that one of the places on my travel bucket list is Venice. I first went to Bruges and it sort of satisfied that itch a bit, and then I booked a ticket to Venice but it got canceled because of Covid Delta lockdown… but I still plan on going there one day, hopefully soon.

Venice is known to be an expensive city, but it definitely is possible to do it on a budget. Here’s how.

The beautiful city of Venice holds an undeniable charm, with its grand canals and picturesque coral buildings; it is a place of dreams. But while it may be a dream location, the costs associated with making that dream a reality often seem to be more of a nightmare. However, the question remains—can you do Venice cheaply? And the answer is, indeed, you can. Here’s how.

Smart Planning for a Richer Experience

Start by managing your travel costs wisely. Venice’s timeless charm and cultural appeal make it a popular destination, meaning flight deals are plentiful if you’re willing to search and stay flexible. While direct routes offer convenience, considering multi-city options can be more cost-effective and allow you to explore even more, perhaps adding an opera concert in Verona to your journey. Booking in advance not only helps you secure better travel prices but can also save money on cultural experiences that are in high demand during peak seasons.

Finding Affordable Accommodations

Accommodation can be one of the biggest expenses, but you can find places that provide a comfortable stay without burning a hole in your pocket. Old neighborhoods like Cannaregio and Castello not only offer comparatively low-priced guest houses and B&Bs, but they also offer a slice of the local Venetian life. Remember to book in advance and avoid peak seasons to get the best deals.

Eat Like a Local and Save

When it comes to dining, avoid the overpriced tourist traps around major tourist draws like Piazza San Marco. Instead, venture into the local neighborhoods where ‘osterie’ and ‘bacari’ (traditional Venetian bars) offer ‘cicchetti’, small snacks or side dishes, at a much cheaper price than a full sit-down meal. You can also visit local supermarkets or food markets like Rialto Market to purchase fresh produce and have a picnic to be enjoyed along one of Venice’s many beautiful canals or parks.

Use Public Transportation or Walk

While the iconic gondola rides are a bucket-list experience, the cost can quickly add up. If you’re aiming to travel around Venice cheaply, choose public transportation known as ‘vaporettos’ (water buses)—you’ll still get the experience of traveling on water without the hefty price tag. Don’t forget that the easiest (and cheapest) way to explore Venice is on foot, and you will often find less crowded and more authentic experiences away from main tourist routes.

Free and Low-Cost Attraction Visits

Many of Venice’s attractions come with admission fees. However, there are plenty of ways to experience the city without a high cost. Some churches and museums offer free entrance or heavily discounted costs for certain days or times, so research your options beforehand. For example, Saint Mark’s Basilica, a staple of Venice sightseeing, offers free entrance to its main hall.

Take advantage of Venice’s public squares like the Piazza San Marco where you can witness the delightful orchestras playing at Caffe Florian and Caffe Quadri for free. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection offers free admission on Sundays while Museo Correr offers discounted rates to students and seniors.

Do Not Get Lost in Shopping

Venice provides an excellent lure for shopping, from high-end fashion to unique craft shops. As a budget-conscious traveler, appreciate the artistry, indulge in window shopping, or prioritize what you really want to take back as a memento. The Mercati di Rialto (Rialto markets) are a great place to find reasonably priced souvenirs.

In conclusion, it is entirely possible to experience the wonders of Venice without breaking your bank. With careful planning, an eye for deals, and a willingness to go a little off the beaten path, a trip to this enchanting city can be more affordable than you might think. The beauty of Venice is not in its price tag, but in the experience it offers—don’t let a tight budget deter you from the adventure of a lifetime.
